Does United Airlines Refund the Difference If the Price Drops After You Book?
What the DOT 24-hour rule, Future Flight Credits, and repricing actually get you back, and the exact words to use with an agent.
By The Junova Team
The short answer
Yes, but only if you catch it. United doesn’t watch your booking, and it won’t refund a price drop on its own. Cancel inside 24 hours of booking (ticket bought at least 7 days before departure) and you get cash back to your card under the DOT 24-hour rule.
After that, the type of refund depends on your fare: refundable tickets refund the difference to your original payment method; nonrefundable Economy and premium cabin fares return the difference as a Future Flight Credit.
Key facts at a glance
What you need to know before you call
- United doesn’t offer a low-fare guarantee, and no one at the airline is tracking your booking for price drops.
- First 24 hours: full cash refund. Book at least 7 days before departure and you can cancel any fare, even Basic Economy, for your money back on the original form of payment.
- After 24 hours: what you get back depends on your fare.
- Refundable fares can be canceled and refunded to your original form of payment any time before departure.
- Nonrefundable Economy, Economy Plus, and premium cabin fares on flights starting in the U.S. still carry no change fee, but the fare difference posts as a Future Flight Credit any time before departure.
- That credit expires 12 months from when you originally bought the ticket. You need to actually fly by that date, not just book by it.
- Basic Economy is the outlier. You get the same 24-hour refund window as everyone else, but after that, you can’t change the flight at all. Canceling is your only option, and it costs $49.50 one-way or $99 round-trip domestically, $99.50 / $199 for international, with the rest coming back as credit.
- Award tickets are the easiest to deal with. No fee to change or cancel, no matter your status or where you’re flying from.

The mechanism
Does United refund you automatically when the price drops?
No. There’s no post-booking price guarantee, no monitoring, and no email when the fare falls. If you don’t notice the drop, nothing happens.
The mechanism is called repricing: you change your existing reservation to today’s lower fare, and United reissues the ticket at the new price. Where the difference goes depends on what you bought. Refundable fares get cash back to the original payment method; nonrefundable fares get a Future Flight Credit. Inside the 24-hour DOT window, every fare class can be canceled outright for a full cash refund and rebooked at the lower price.
The fine print
What does United’s price-drop policy actually say?
Straight from United’s own Flexible Booking Options page:
“If the new flight is priced lower, the customer may change without paying a change fee, and standard fare tickets may be given residual value in the form of a future flight credit.”
The word to notice is “may.” United’s policy doesn’t guarantee residual value.
What is the United price-drop policy by scenario?
| Scenario | What you get back | Form | Fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cancel within 24 hours of booking, ticket 7+ days before departure | Full original fare | Cash to original payment method | None |
| After 24 hours: standard Economy, Economy Plus, or premium cabin on U.S.-originating routes | Fare difference | Future Flight Credit (eCredit) | None |
| After 24 hours: international itinerary not originating in the U.S. | Fare difference | Future Flight Credit | Change fee applies |
| Basic Economy, after 24 hours | Original fare minus fee | Future Flight Credit | $49.50 one-way / $99 round-trip domestic; $99.50 / $199 international |
| Award ticket, U.S./Canada-originating non-Basic | Mile difference | Miles redeposited | None |
| Award ticket, international-origin non-Basic | Mile difference | Miles redeposited | $150 for non-elite MileagePlus, none for elite MileagePlus |

Is a United price-drop refund cash or credit?
It depends on your fare type.
Refundable fare: cash to your card, any time before departure. United’s stated policy: “Refundable fares can be canceled and refunded to the original form of payment any time before the flight departs.”
Nonrefundable fare:
- Inside 24 hours of booking: cash to your card under the DOT 24-hour rule. Cancel and rebook instead of repricing, so you get money back on your card instead of a Future Flight Credit locked to one traveler for 12 months.
- After 24 hours: Future Flight Credit only.
- Basic Economy: cash inside the 24-hour DOT window. After that, you can’t reprice at all. The only move is to cancel for a partial credit, minus a $49.50–$199 fee.
How to do it
How do you reprice a United flight?
Call United at 1-800-864-8331.
Why won’t united.com show your own flight in the change list?
This is the wall most people hit. When you search a change on united.com, the results often leave out the exact flight you’re on, the one you actually want at a lower price. Two workarounds:
- 1
Ask an agent to reprice it. Open United chat or call 1-800-864-8331 and use the word “reprice.” An agent can reissue the ticket in place: same flight, same seats, same confirmation code, credit posted within minutes.
- 2
Change out, then change back. Change to a different flight the same day, then change back. The second change re-shops your flight at the current fare. It’s risky because your seats might not be there when you return.
The word is “reprice.” Say “change my flight” and the agent goes hunting for different flights. Say “please reprice my reservation at the current lower fare” and you’ll usually land on the same flight, same seats, same PNR.
What is a Future Flight Credit, exactly?
A Future Flight Credit (FFC) is what United issues when a ticket is canceled, changed, or repriced and has value left on it. Three things trip people up:
- Non-transferable. The credit belongs to whoever’s name is on the original ticket. On a multi-passenger reservation, each passenger gets their own individual credit.
- The clock starts before you get it. An FFC is generally good for 12 months from the day the original ticket was issued, not from the day the credit posted.
- Travel has to begin by the expiry date. Booking before the deadline for a flight that departs after it won’t save the credit. On a roundtrip, at least the outbound has to leave by the expiration date.
Future Flight Credit vs Electronic Travel Certificate vs TravelBank: what’s the difference?
United hands out three different products that people all call “travel credit,” and a price-drop reprice always lands in the first row.
| Credit type | How you get it | Expiration | Who can use it | Combines with |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Future Flight Credit (FFC) | Voluntary change, cancellation, or price-drop reprice | ~12 months from original ticket issue date | Original traveler only (non-transferable) | Other FFCs; not ETCs or TravelBank |
| Electronic Travel Certificate (ETC) | Goodwill or compensation for service issues, delays, IDB | 24 months from issue date | Anyone (transferable, requires 10-digit PIN) | Up to 10 ETCs; not FFCs or TravelBank |
| TravelBank | Prepaid deposits, card perks | 5 years from last activity | Account holder | Neither FFCs nor ETCs |

If somebody tells you your credit is good for two years, they’re thinking of an ETC, not what a price drop produces.
Should you buy Basic Economy in the first place?
For most travelers, no. Basic Economy strips out almost everything that makes a fare recoverable if plans or prices change:
- No changes after 24 hours. You can’t move dates and can’t switch flights.
- No free seat selection. United auto-assigns.
- No full-size carry-on on domestic routes unless you have Premier status, a United co-branded credit card, or Star Alliance Gold. Show up at the gate with one and you’ll pay $65 to check it.
- Last boarding group. Overhead bin space is a lottery even for your personal item.
- No complimentary upgrades, even with elite status.
NerdWallet’s 2026 fare analysis found Basic Economy runs about that much cheaper on United. But once you add a $35–$45 checked bag and $10–$25 for a seat, you’re often back at parity with standard Economy, for a worse product with no flexibility.
Basic Economy only pencils out on a short trip you’re certain about, with a backpack and nothing to check. In every other case, you’re better off paying for standard Economy. On United domestic routes the difference typically runs $40 to $100 roundtrip, and the optionality may be worth more than the savings.
Are award tickets easier?
United charges no cancellation or redeposit fee on award tickets for any MileagePlus member, elite or not, regardless of where the flight originates.
How a fare-monitoring service handles this
Junova watches the fare after you book, so you don’t have to.
Junova is a fare-tracking tool that monitors your flight after you book. You book directly with United, forward the confirmation, and Junova watches the exact fare for drops. When an eligible drop hits, Junova secures the difference back as airline credit on your MileagePlus account on the same itinerary when available.
- Free to set up, no upfront cost
- 20% success fee on savings recovered, nothing if nothing drops
- Works with United, Delta, American, Alaska, and Southwest
- Covers standard Economy and above; Basic Economy generally isn’t eligible under United’s rules
United fares may change hundreds of times between booking and departure. The chance for a price-drop refund is real. The catch is you have to monitor it yourself. A fare-monitoring service replaces the manual checking.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
- Does United refund you if the flight price drops after booking?
- Only if you go through the process. United doesn’t refund price drops automatically. Inside 24 hours of booking (any fare), cancel and rebook for a full cash refund under the DOT rule. A refundable fare gets cash back any time before departure. A nonrefundable fare (most Economy and premium cabin), after 24 hours, gets a Future Flight Credit. Basic Economy, after 24 hours, can’t be repriced at all: only cancel-for-partial-credit minus a $49.50–$199 fee.
- Is a United price-drop refund cash or credit?
- Depends on fare type: a refundable fare gets cash to your original payment method any time before departure. A nonrefundable fare inside 24 hours of booking gets cash (cancel and rebook under the DOT rule); after 24 hours, it’s a Future Flight Credit locked to the original traveler for about 12 months. Basic Economy gets cash inside 24 hours, then only a partial Future Flight Credit minus a fee.
- How long does a United Future Flight Credit last?
- 12 months from the date the original ticket was issued, not 12 months from when the credit posted. Travel has to begin by that date. Confirm the exact expiration in your united.com wallet.
- Can I change a Basic Economy ticket if the price drops?
- No. Basic Economy isn’t changeable domestically. You can cancel it after 24 hours for a partial credit minus a fee: $49.50 one-way / $99 round-trip domestic, $99.50 / $199 international.
- What’s the difference between TravelBank and a Future Flight Credit?
- TravelBank is prepaid cash you deposit yourself. It lasts five years and can’t be combined with FFCs or ETCs. A Future Flight Credit comes from a canceled or repriced ticket, lasts about 12 months, and is locked to one traveler.
- Do I pay a change fee to reprice a United flight?
- Not on standard Economy, Economy Plus, or premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S., between the U.S. and Mexico or the Caribbean, or on international itineraries starting in the U.S. Basic Economy can’t be changed; international flights originating outside the U.S. still carry a change fee.
- Can I combine multiple United Future Flight Credits on one booking?
- Yes. Multiple FFCs stack on a single ticket. You can’t mix an FFC with an ETC or TravelBank on the same booking.
- What happens if my award ticket price drops?
- Rebook at the lower mileage rate and the difference redeposits to your MileagePlus account, free for U.S./Canada-originating non-Basic awards for every MileagePlus tier. Non-elite members pay $150 on some international-origin cancellations.
- Is there a magic word that gets United agents to reprice a ticket?
- Yes: “reprice.” Ask the agent to “reprice my reservation at the current lower fare” instead of asking to “change” the flight. The reservation, seats, and confirmation code all stay intact, and the fare difference posts as a Future Flight Credit.
- Do United travel credits expire?
- Future Flight Credits: 12 months from original ticket issue date. Electronic Travel Certificates: 24 months from issue. TravelBank: 5 years from last activity.
