We Tracked 10,000 Flights Worth $20 Million. Here's What Happened After Travelers Booked.

The Junova Flight Price Report. Summer 2026 edition.

By The Junova Team

Millions of travelers assume that once they book a flight, the price only goes one direction: up. But that's not what our data shows. In fact, the price chart looks more like a volatile stock chart than an up-and-to-the-right startup revenue chart.

Junova analyzed the most recent 10,000 flights worth more than $20 million in airfare that travelers asked us to monitor after booking. We tracked fares across the top five major US airlines, automatically monitoring for savings opportunities to secure money back when prices dropped.

Here are the Top 5 findings from our database.

Finding #1

Nearly 1 in 4 Flights Got Cheaper After Booking

22.4%

of all tracked flights experienced at least one successful price drop after booking.

By the numbers

10,000Flights tracked
$20M+Airfare monitored
2,236Flights with a price drop
3,775Total savings events

Takeaway: Flight prices remain surprisingly dynamic after travelers purchase their tickets. In our dataset, nearly one in four flights became cheaper before departure. Many of the flights we received are less than one month, and a good amount are less than one week from departure.

Finding #2

Travelers Saved $550,000 After Booking

Total recovered$550,476

Across all monitored flights, Junova helped travelers recover $550,476 in airline credits and refunds. Many individual savings were modest, but collectively they added up to hundreds of thousands of dollars that travelers otherwise would have missed.

Imagine if we counted 100,000 or even 1,000,000 flights. There are over 100,000 commercial flights taking off each day, suggesting that the money left on the table is staggering.

Finding #3

Flight Prices Often Drop More Than Once

Many travelers think airfare changes only once. Our data suggests otherwise. In fact, many flights experience multiple price drops.

Among successful flights

Price drops

How many times a successful flight dropped

Flights

1 drop1,377
2 drops507
3 drops183
4 drops95
5 drops29
6 drops23
7 drops13
8 drops6
10 drops2
13 drops1

This means monitoring a flight once isn't always enough. Prices can continue moving right up until departure. And imagine trying to monitor the price for a flight that drops 13 times and having to call the airline, wait on hold, and try to negotiate the refund. We think you can put that time and effort to better use.

Finding #4

Most Savings Were Meaningful

While a handful of travelers saved thousands of dollars, most saved between $50 and $250, enough to meaningfully reduce the cost of a trip.

Savings

Distribution of savings per successful flight

Average~$155Median~$70
Under $25442
$25–50440
$50–100492
$100–250551
$250–500186
$500–1,00087
$1,000+38

The mean savings is quite impressive, but even the median shows that while some extraordinary savings pull the average upward, a typical successful fare drop can easily cover a family meal, a few checked bags, or transportation at your destination.

Finding #5

Some Travelers Saved Thousands

Although most savings were under a few hundred dollars, a surprising number were much larger.

Top recorded savings

  1. 1$11,854
  2. 2$4,785
  3. 3$4,367
  4. 4$3,334
  5. 5$2,821
  6. 6$2,820
  7. 7$2,702
  8. 8$2,565
  9. 9$2,500
  10. 10$2,412

Large savings were typically associated with premium cabin travel, international itineraries, or family bookings with multiple passengers. Destinations for these trips include Venice, Rome, Belize City, Johannesburg, London, but also Hawaii and New York.

What This Means for Travelers

Our analysis points to a simple conclusion:

Booking your flight isn't the end of the pricing story.

Airfares continue to move after purchase, and those changes can create opportunities to recover airline credits or refunds depending on the airline's policies and fare rules. Rather than trying to perfectly time your purchase, travelers may be better served by booking when they're set on an itinerary and continuing to monitor the fare afterward to ensure they get the best price.

Methodology

The Junova Flight Price Report analyzed:

  • 10,000 flights. Flights = bookings in this context. One ‘flight’ could be round-trip, multi-city, or one-way. It could have one or multiple passengers. And it could be direct or have layovers.
  • More than $20 million in monitored airfare. This is the total amount our community spent on booking these 10,000 flights.
  • 3,775 successful fare-savings events secured by Junova.
  • Flights monitored across supported U.S. airlines, including United Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines, and Alaska Airlines. (No, Delta Air Lines is not a typo).

Data reflects the last 10,000 flights monitored by Junova through July 2026.
