Does Delta Air Lines Refund the Difference If the Price Drops After You Book?

What Delta’s 24-Hour Risk-Free Cancellation policy, eCredits, and fare-matching actually get you back, and the exact words to use with an agent.

By The Junova Team

The short answer

Yes, but only if you catch it. Delta doesn’t watch your booking, and it won’t refund a price drop on its own. Cancel inside 24 hours of booking and you get cash back to your card under Delta’s own 24-Hour Risk-Free Cancellation policy.

After that, the type of refund depends on your fare: refundable and Extra tickets refund the difference to your original payment method; nonrefundable Classic fares return the difference as an eCredit.

Key facts at a glance

What you need to know before you call

  • Delta doesn’t offer a live, ongoing low-fare guarantee, and no one at the airline is tracking your booking for price drops after. Its “Low Fare Commitment” only promises you’re getting Delta’s best price at the moment you book directly on delta.com or the app.
    • First 24 hours: full cash refund. Book directly with Delta and you can cancel any fare, including Basic, before departure for your money back on the original form of payment, no fee.
    • After 24 hours: what you get back depends on your fare.
  • Refundable and Extra fares can be canceled and refunded to your original form of payment any time before departure.
  • Classic (nonrefundable) fares on tickets originating in the U.S., Canada, or the Caribbean carry no change fee; the fare difference posts as an eCredit any time before departure.
    • That eCredit expires 12 months from when you originally bought the ticket.
  • Award tickets are the easiest to deal with. No redeposit or change fee on any SkyMiles tier for award travel originating in the U.S. or Canada, excluding Basic award fares.

The mechanism

Does Delta refund you automatically when the price drops?

No. There’s no post-booking price monitor, and no email when the fare falls. If you don’t notice the drop, nothing happens.

The mechanism is the same one Delta uses for any voluntary change: you change your existing reservation to today’s lower fare, and Delta reissues the ticket at the new price. Where the difference goes depends on what you bought. Refundable and Extra fares get cash back to the original payment method; Classic fares get an eCredit. Inside the 24-hour window, every fare can be canceled outright for a full cash refund.

The fine print

What does Delta’s price-drop policy actually say?

Delta doesn’t have a dedicated price-drop policy. There’s no page that spells out what happens when a fare you already booked gets cheaper. What you can piece together from its site is that nothing happens on its own: no fare monitoring, no alert, no automatic credit. You have to notice the drop yourself, contact the airline yourself, and request an agent to reprice the ticket.

“If your new flight costs less than your current flight, you may be issued an eCredit for the fare difference (minus any applicable change fees).”

Is a Delta price-drop refund cash or credit?

Depends on the fare.

Refundable or Extra: cash back to your card, any time before you fly. (Delta Travel Flexibility)

Classic (nonrefundable):

  • First 24 hours: original form of payment.
  • After 24 hours: eCredit, no fee, if your trip starts in the U.S., Canada, or the Caribbean. (Delta Change or Cancel Overview)

Basic Economy: same deal for the first 24 hours, cash back. Past that window, it’s murky. Delta’s fee page says you can change it for $99 to $500 depending on cabin, with the rest coming back as an eCredit. But Delta’s own cancellation page says flat out that Basic can’t be changed or refunded once the 24 hours are up. Those two pages contradict each other, so past the 24-hour mark, just call Delta and ask before you count on anything. (Delta Baggage and Travel Fees; Delta Cancellations and Refunds)

How to do it

How do you get Delta to match a lower fare?

Call 800-221-1212 and ask the agent to change your ticket to today’s lower fare on the same flight.

What is a Delta eCredit, exactly?

An eCredit is what Delta issues when a ticket is canceled, changed, or repriced and has value left on it. (Delta eCredits, Certificates and Gift Cards)

  • Generally non-transferable. It’s tied to the traveler’s name and SkyMiles profile. The one exception: on a multi-passenger booking, any traveler on that original reservation can apply the eCredit toward their own new ticket. (One Mile at a Time)
  • The clock starts before you get it. An eCredit is generally valid for 12 months from the date the original ticket was issued, not from the day the credit posted. If Delta caused the disruption (a significant delay or cancellation) instead of you canceling voluntarily, that window extends to 5 years. (Delta eCredits, Certificates and Gift Cards)
  • You only need to book by the deadline. Unlike some airlines, Delta doesn’t require travel to begin by the expiration date. Just book your next ticket before the eCredit expires. (One Mile at a Time)

eCredit vs. Certificate vs. Gift Card: what’s the difference?

Delta hands out three different products that people all call “travel credit,” and a price-drop change always lands an eCredit.

Credit typeHow you get itExpirationWho can use itCombines with
eCreditVoluntary cancellation, change, or price-drop reprice; unused ticket value~12 months from original ticket issue date (5 years if Delta-caused)Original traveler’s SkyMiles profile; any co-passenger on the original booking can use it toward their own ticketUp to 5 eCredits on a new booking, 2 on a change; can combine with a Companion Certificate; not with miles or award redemption
Certificate (e.g., Amex Companion Certificate)Delta SkyMiles Amex card benefit, or service-recovery compensationCompanion Certificate: 1 year from issue; compensation certificates follow their own termsThe cardholder (companion travels with them) or whoever the compensation certificate namesOne Certificate per booking; can combine with eCredits, not with another Certificate
Gift CardPurchased by anyone, given as a giftNo stated expirationWhoever holds the card number and PIN (not officially confirmed, but implied by Delta’s no-replacement policy for lost/stolen cards)Up to 5 per booking; other payment methods can likely be added at checkout (not explicitly stated)

Should you buy Basic Economy in the first place?

The trade-offs on Delta’s Basic Economy (Main Basic and up) are about the same as anywhere else. You’re not getting a meaningfully worse or better deal than other airlines’ basic fares. What you’re giving up:

  • No free seat selection. Delta assigns your seat at check-in, and travelers on the same booking can be split up.
  • No included checked bag. $45 for the first bag and $55 for the second on domestic flights; international fees vary by region, and Asia routes actually include one free checked bag.
  • Last boarding zone, with one exception: Delta SkyMiles Gold, Platinum, or Reserve Amex cardholders board in Zone 5, three groups ahead of most Basic Economy flyers.
  • No upgrades, ever, and no Sky Club access even with an existing membership.
  • No SkyMiles earned and no credit toward Medallion status, a steeper trade-off than the fare discount alone suggests.
~$87Average domestic savings vs. Main Cabin
~$190Average international savings vs. Main Cabin

NerdWallet’s 2026 fare analysis found Basic Economy runs about that much cheaper on Delta. Add a $45 checked bag, and a decent chunk of that discount is gone. And that’s before you start considering the value of the SkyMiles you miss out on, or not having space for your carry-on luggage.

Are award tickets easier?

Yes. Delta charges no redeposit or change fee on award tickets for any SkyMiles member for travel originating in the U.S. or Canada to anywhere in the world, Basic award fares excluded. (Delta SkyMiles Travel With Miles) Basic award tickets, and some awards originating outside the U.S. and Canada, follow different and less consistent rules. Check the Baggage and Travel Fees page for your specific route before assuming a free redeposit applies.

How a fare-monitoring service handles this

Junova watches the fare after you book, so you don’t have to.

Junova is a fare-tracking tool that monitors your flight after you book. You book directly with Delta, forward the confirmation, and Junova watches the exact fare for price drops. When an eligible price drop hits, Junova secures the difference back on the same itinerary.

  • Free to set up, no upfront cost
  • 20% success fee on savings recovered, no cost if no price drops are secured
  • Works with Delta, United, American, Alaska, and Southwest
  • Covers Classic, Extra, and Refundable fares

Delta fares can move hundreds of times between booking and departure. The chance for a price-drop refund is real. The catch is you have to monitor it and contact the airline yourself. A fare-monitoring service replaces the manual labor.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does Delta refund you if the flight price drops after booking?
Only if you go through the process. Delta doesn’t refund price drops automatically. Inside 24 hours of booking (any fare), cancel and rebook for a full cash refund to your card. A refundable or Extra fare gets cash back any time before departure. A Classic fare, after 24 hours, gets an eCredit, fee-free if your trip starts in the U.S., Canada, or the Caribbean (other origins usually carry a change fee). Basic Economy, after 24 hours, can only be canceled for a fee.
Is a Delta price-drop refund cash or credit?
Depends on your fare type: a refundable or Extra fare gets cash to your original payment method any time before departure. A Classic fare inside 24 hours of booking gets cash (cancel and rebook); after 24 hours, it’s an eCredit, generally tied to the original traveler for about 12 months. Basic Economy gets cash inside 24 hours; after that it’s not changeable, and you can only cancel for a fee.
How long does a Delta eCredit last?
12 months from the date the original ticket was issued. You need to book your next ticket by that date; you don’t have to fly by then. If the eCredit came from a Delta-caused cancellation or significant delay, it’s valid for 5 years instead.
Can I change a Basic Economy ticket if the price drops?
No. Basic Economy can’t be changed once the 24-hour window closes. You can only cancel it for a fee ($99 on Main Basic or Comfort Basic, or $300 to $500 for premium-cabin Basic fares on U.S./Canada-originating tickets), and the remaining value posts as an eCredit.
What’s the difference between a Gift Card, a Certificate, and an eCredit?
A Gift Card is a prepaid value that anyone can buy as a gift. Delta says these never expire, and while it isn’t spelled out explicitly, they likely work like cash since Delta won’t replace a lost or stolen card. A Certificate, like the Amex Companion Certificate, comes from a card benefit or service compensation and follows its own terms. An eCredit comes from a canceled, changed, or repriced ticket, lasts 12 months, and is tied to the original traveler.
Do I pay a change fee to reprice a Delta flight?
Not on Classic, Extra, or Refundable tickets originating in the U.S., Canada, or the Caribbean. Basic fares are unchangeable. They must be canceled for a fee.
Can I combine multiple Delta eCredits on one booking?
Yes, up to five on a new purchase and two on a ticket change. Only one Certificate is allowed per booking, but that one Certificate can be paired with your eCredits.
What happens if my award ticket price drops?
Rebook at the lower mileage rate and the difference redeposits to your SkyMiles account, free for every Medallion tier and general member alike, as long as the award originated in the U.S. or Canada and isn’t a Basic award fare.
Is there a magic word that gets Delta agents to reprice a ticket?
Ask the agent to change your existing ticket to today’s lower fare on the same flight, rather than asking to “change flights,” which can send them shopping for different options instead.
Do Delta travel credits expire?
eCredits last 12 months from the original ticket issue date, or 5 years if Delta caused the disruption. Companion Certificates last 1 year from issue. Gift Cards never expire, according to Delta.
